Directing for his first serious film: "A Woman of Paris" (1923)

Directing is a serious business.

Directing Adolphe Menjou.

Although this movie was not a hit with the public, Chaplin always had a special place in his heart for this film. Sadly, Edna Purviance's movie career did not blossom after this film role, much to Charlie's dismay. Edna was, if not the best leading lady Charlie ever had. Their on-screen chemistry was impeccable and The Tramp's character grew only through her.
